After discontinuing the iconic R6, Yamaha’s supersport lineup looks a little incomplete. As per the reports coming in, the brand might add a new 500cc supersport to its lineup. The new Yamaha R5 is supposed to bridge the gap between the smaller R3 and the bigger R7. So here is everything you need to know about this new sports bike from Yamaha.
Yamaha R5 Price and Launch Date
Yamaha has not confirmed the news about the launch of the R5 as of now. The brand has not provided any information officially regarding this rumoured supersport motorcycle. If you go by the gossip going on in the motorcycling community, the Yamaha R5 is under initial phases of development. We don’t know for sure how long we will have to wait to see this become a reality.
Yamaha R5 Price in India
Yamaha has been looking to re-enter the premium sports bike segment in India for a long time now. The new R5 could be a perfect option for the brand to re-enter this segment. The Yamaha R5 price is expected to be in the range of Rs 5 – 5.5 Lakhs in India. If this 500cc sports bike is launched, it will compete against the upcoming Honda CBR500R & the KTM RC 490.
Yamaha R5 Specifications and Features
Yamaha will develop a new twin-cylinder motor for this supersport. It will be fitted with a 499cc 2-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The Yamaha R5 powertrain will come with a variable valve actuation (VVA) feature like its siblings. This supersport will be mated to a 6-speed transmission. Yamaha may also equip it with a slipper clutch and quick shifter to give it an edge against its competitors.

Talking about the design, the new Yamaha R5 will look similar to the new-gen R-series supersport. We expect to it borrow the sleek design from its bigger sibling the R7. It will use the same tried and tested delta box frame. The R5 will be equipped with an inverted telescopic front suspension and a link-type rear shock absorber.
This 500cc supersport bike will come with dual hydraulic disc brakes on the front wheel and a single hydraulic disc brake on the rear wheel. It will come with 2-channel ABS but Yamaha might also equip it with a traction control system. The Yamaha R5 will be seen rolling on stylish and lightweight alloy wheels and premium radial tyres.
Seeing the updates on new-gen R-series supersport bikes, we think even the R5 will inherit most of those features. It will come with an LED projector headlight with LED DRLs. The Yamaha R5 will feature a fully digital LCD instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity. It will come with step seats and it will provide a sporty riding posture.
Competition
If the Yamaha R5 turns into a reality, it will face firm competition from its Japanese counterparts. Its major competitors will be the Honda CBR500R and the Kawasaki Ninja 400. Both the CBR500R & Ninja 400 come with a powerful twin-cylinder engine that delivers exciting performance.

It will be fun to see how the new R5 stand against these two established supersport in the mid-capacity segment. The competition will further spice up once KTM launches its 490cc twin-cylinder RC supersport. The RC 490 is expected to launch soon and it will be equipped with a powerful 2-cylinder engine.
Does the Yamaha R5 Make Sense?
Definitely, there is a lot of room for the new R5 in the Yamaha’s supersport lineup. Brands like KTM are also ready to enter this segment with new models, then why not Yamaha. We hope the new Yamaha R5 comes with a smooth and top-end friendly engine like its sibling. If Yamaha manages to price it right, it will be a great option for buyers looking to upgrade from an entry-level sports bike.
